Big changes are coming for UK visa applicants and travelers planning to visit the United Kingdom. The UK government is switching its visa application center service provider and introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. Here’s everything you need to know about these important updates.
UK Switches Visa Application Centers to VFS Global
Between September 2024 and January 2025, the UK will change its commercial partner for running visa application centers in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The contract, previously managed by TLScontact since 2014, will be gradually transferred to VFS Global, a global leader in outsourced visa services.
Why the Change?
The UK government aims to improve services for visa applicants. By partnering with VFS Global, they hope to offer:
- Shorter Appointments: Streamlined processes to reduce waiting times.
- Faster Passport Collection: An average passport collection time of just 20 minutes.

From October 22, 2024, VFS Global will operate Visa Application Centers in:
- Algeria
- Côte d’Ivoire
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Gabon

What Does This Mean for Visa Applicants?
- Existing Appointments: If you have already booked an appointment at a TLScontact center, attend it as scheduled. Check your confirmation email for details.
- Changing Appointments: If you need to reschedule, you might have to pay the Mandatory User Pay (MUP) fee again. If this happens, request a refund of the original fee from TLScontact.
- Application Decisions: The change in service provider will not affect the decision on your visa application or processing times.
Introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) System
In addition to changing service providers, the UK is rolling out a new Electronic Travel Authorization system. This will affect visitors from countries who currently do not need a visa to enter the UK.
What is the ETA?
The ETA is a new entry requirement designed to:
- Strengthen Border Security: Enhance the UK’s ability to screen travelers before they arrive.
- Simplify Entry Procedures: Streamline the process for travelers by allowing them to apply online.
