In addition to master’s and doctoral degree students, exceptions are made for spouses of undergraduate students enrolled in certain professional degree programs such as:
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS, DMD)
- Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor (LLB, JD, BCL)
- Doctor of Medicine (MD)
- Doctor of Optometry (OD)
- Pharmacy (PharmD, BS, BSc, BPharm)
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN, BSN, BNSc)
- Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)
- Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng., BE, BASc)
Notably, those who submitted their SOWP applications before March 19, 2024, will still be processed under the old criteria, provided the international student has a valid study permit and is eligible for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP), amongst other conditions.

Documentation and Eligibility
For a successful SOWP application under the new rules, applicants must present substantial evidence of their partner’s enrollment in an eligible program, including a valid Letter of Acceptance, proof of enrollment letter, or transcripts from the academic institution.
